SONG INSPIRATION
The inspiration for The Root that Ate Roger Williams began with an 1874 Rhode Island folk song titled "The Settlement of Rhode Island." Nancy first heard the song during a concert performed by the Vox Hunters, a Rhode Island musical duo that includes one of her former students who is now a professional musician. The humorous song retells the story of Rhode Island's founding, Roger Williams' journey, and the fascinating legend surrounding his remains discovered nearly 200 years after his death. The song's verses, along with a QR code linking readers to the musical performance, are included in the book's endpapers, allowing children and families to experience the story beyond the pages.
RESEARCH & DISCOVERY
Nancy's research began with a simple question: How can Roger Williams' story be shared with children in a way that feels exciting and meaningful? Her early research revealed that many existing children's resources about Roger Williams felt dry and difficult for young readers. Nancy believed children deserved a story that would capture their curiosity. She visited museums, libraries, historic locations, and important sites connected to Roger Williams' life, including his different burial locations and the Rhode Island Historical Society's collection of his personal artifacts. One discovery in particular inspired the title of the book: the famous "root" connected to Roger Williams' story.
WRITING THE STORY
Writing The Root that Ate Roger Williams required many drafts, revisions, and careful decisions. Nancy wanted to preserve the humor and imagination of the original folk song while honoring the important history behind Roger Williams and his role in shaping Rhode Island. She wanted young readers to discover his story without feeling overwhelmed by complicated language or a serious historical tone. With support from former history teachers and children's librarians, Nancy refined the story until it found the right balance between: Historical accuracy, Humor and imagination, Engaging storytelling, A child-friendly approach to learning. The result became a playful historical adventure that introduces children to Roger Williams in a way that feels meaningful, memorable, and fun.
The Illustration Journey
Nancy wanted the illustrator to have a genuine Rhode Island connection. Illustrator Chris Hilaire, who studied at the University of Rhode Island and now lives in Connecticut, was the perfect choice because he was close enough to visit the historical locations connected to Roger Williams. This allowed him to create illustrations that were historically accurate while also capturing the feeling and atmosphere of Rhode Island. Chris worked carefully through drawings and revisions, comparing his ideas with Nancy's vision for the book. His creativity, attention to detail, and ability to solve artistic challenges helped create illustrations that became the perfect companion to the story.
